coast in Calabria, and separates the gulfs of Gioia
Tauro, to the south, and S. Eufemia to the north.

The origin of its name is lost among the
civilizations who settled here over thousands of
years: the Greeks, Romans, Saracens and Normans;
followed by French and Spanish. Literary folklore
tells of the existence of on oracle, kept in a cave
among the rocks of the headland, which was consulted
by sailors before embarking on the perilous crossing
of Scilla and Cariddi, to ask for information on the
difficulties they might meet. Hence the name means
